Wichita, Kansas holds a history just as rich as the name it carries. This great city is named after its first permanent settlers, the Wichita Indians in 1863. Even prior to that date, Wichita was a hopping location for commerce and trade. Over 11,000 years ago, Wichita was a trading center for nomadic peoples. In search of the "Cities of Gold", Francisco Vasquez de Coronado stumbled upon this land in 1541 and met the Wichita Indians who were already dwelling in the area. The noted Chisholm Trail, pathway cattle ranchers used to transport cows from Texas to Kansas, blazed right through Wichita. This trail helped give Wichita its nickname, CowTown. With cattle transportation flowing through the city, it became a rest stop for quite a few rowdy cowboys. Even Wyatt Earp was known to help keep the peace stabilized within the city.
