Overview
(edit)
Connecticut Ave/K Street is one of the busiest areas in Washington DC, and many people commute to work here each day. During the workweek, the streets are lined with sidewalk vendors offering everything from hot dogs to burritos and bibimbap. There is a good mix of chain and independent restaurants here, and it seems like more restaurants are being added each year.
K Street itself is famous for its many lobbying and law offices. There was even a short-lived TV series based on this area. The people who work here are more formal than in other parts of DC, such as Georgetown, but mostly everyone loosens up after the work day to enjoy one of the area's many happy hours. There are a number of large clubs and lounges on and near K St. Many of these clubs and lounges are the of the fancier-type, and require cover charges and dress codes. The nightlife on K St. seems to draw its crowds from the city's suburbs.
As far as convenience, it doesn't get much better than this area, since it is near several Metro stops and is only about a 15 minute walk to downtown.
Often referred to as part of DC's Golden Triangle, the Connecticut Ave/K Street area is one of the city's epicenters. Bounded by Dupont Circle and Farragut Square, Connecticut Ave/K Street is a hub of activity. If you want to be connected, it's a great place to live.

There is no doubt about it--this area is extremely expensive. You'll be hard pressed to find a 1 bedroom under $1650 (and if you do, you probably don't want it). You get alot for the price, though--convinient access to anywhere in DC (even Georgetown, which isn't convinient to anything!), tons of phenomenal restaurants, shopping...If you want to live in the heart of DC, it's worth the price.
Hahahaha, parking. That's cute. Seriously, parking in this area (during the day) is a bloodsport along the lines of the ancient Romans. It's not worth it; take the Metro. There are a few garages, but expect to pay upwards of $15, even for a short visit.
Luckily, there are several Metro stations. Farragut North, Farragut West, McPhearson Square, Metro Center, and on the outer limits, Dupont Circle and Federal Triangle. The Red, Orange, and Blue lines all service Connecticut Ave/K Street, with the Silver soon to be added.
The closest airport is DCA, however, IAD and BWI are also within usable distance.

Try sublet.com or Craig's List. And look for something a little off Connecticut and K, you will be likely to get more space for less. If you have a car, be sure to ask about parking.
If you have something small that doesn't need to be walked, sure. But because space is at such a premium, a larger animal would be unhappy in most of the available spaces. And the crowded sidewalks and lack of viable parks makes walking anything near impossible. A fish would be a good bet around here.
Tons to do:
National Geographic Society/Museum
NASD
St. Matthew's Cathedral
IMF
World Bank
Tons of amazing shopping
Center for Strategic and International Studies
Octagon Museum
Several Smithsonians: Hirshorn, Air and Space, Arts and Industries
L'Enfant Plaza
Dupont Circle
White House
Blair House
And you are right in the heart of downtown DC with access to 3 different Metro lines, soon to be 4
