Overview
(edit)
A quiet neighborhood near the Cathedral, consisting of apartment buildings and single family homes. The area has a nice neigborhood vibe and would be great for families and young professionals who are over their "party" phase. There are a few cute restaurants in the area, and it is just a short bus ride down Wisconsin Ave. to more bustling neighborhoods like Glover Park and Georgetown.

Cathedral Heights is a safe neigborhood with lots of green space. It's not near a Metro stop, but there are plenty of buses that run on Wisconsin and Massachusetts Ave. I would recommend this place not for recent grads, but people who have been in D.C. awhile and want to get away from its bustling urban center.

According to Zagat, one of the most trusted guides to restaurant reviews, there are 1757 mentionable restaurants, and 156 rated noteworthy night spots in the neighborhoods surrounding Cathedral Heights.
On Connecticut Avenue, the row houses are now used as restaurants, offices and shops that serve residents and cater to throngs of Zoo visitors and travelers and conventioneers staying in the two large hotels on Calvert Street (the Omni Shoreham hotel) and Woodley Road (the Marriott Wardman Park hotel, the largest hotel in D.C.) on the edges of the historic district. At night, the place is a hive of activity, particularly since a shuttle bus (WMATA Metrobus No. 98) now runs between the Metro stop (Woodley Park/Adams Morgan) to the heart of Woodley Park, which is nearby, shops and restaurants lining Connecticut Ave include many chains (such as a Baskin-Robbins, a Chipotle, a McDonald's, and a CVS), but also many fine local restaurants and shops. Cathedral Heights is also close to the stores in Tenleytown, and there are a few bars and restaurants in this area that are worthwhile.
At $438,600 the average home value here is a bit higher than average for the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro area, so this probably isn't the place to look for real estate or housing bargains.
A 1 BR can go for $1,600-$2,800; a 2 BR ranges from $2,500-$4,200; and a 3BR is between $3,700-$4,600.
Transportation is in abundance and parking is tough on the main roads like Connecticut and Wisconsin, but doable on the neighborhood roads. Traditionally, the homes are closely spaced, featuring porches or stoops, and often lack driveways.
Cleveland Park - Its main commercial corridor lies along Connecticut Avenue, NW, where the eponymous Cleveland Park station of the Washington Metro's Red Line can be found. The neighborhood is known for its many late 19th century homes, the Washington National Cathedral (heart of the sub-neighborhood of Cathedral Heights), and the historic Art Deco Uptown Theater. It is also home to the Park and Shop, built in 1930 and one of the earliest strip malls.
Tenleytown and adjacent American University Park are served by the Tenleytown-AU stop on the Washington Metro Red Line. The mostly residential area has been called the "town" for American University, which lies approximately one mile to the west in the Spring Valley neighborhood. A free shuttle bus runs between the Metro stop and the university's main campus.
Woodley Park is served by the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan Metro station, between Dupont Circle and Cleveland Park on the Red Line. A shuttle bus (WMATA Metrobus No. 98) now runs between the Metro stop (Woodley Park/Adams Morgan) to the heart of Adams Morgan and the U Street Corridor.
Some apartment renters don't mind paying extra money if they get the satisfaction they want from their rental property. In Cathedral Height you'll have the amenities that you want/need/and are paying for; the condition of unit at move-in will likely be up to par; safety/security is a high priority; a sense of community is definitely paramount in Cathedral Heights; and services are in abundance.

It is the assumption that Cathedral Heights is made up of quiet streets lined with neat single family homes and notable row houses. However, Cathedral Heights is also home to several large condominiums and cooperatives, and even a few rental buildings.
The most remarkable co-op in Cathedral Heights is the Westchester, a full-service building that includes more than 550 units, making it one of the largest luxury apartment houses in DC. The Westchester offers its residents its own restaurant, beauty salon, dry cleaners, convenience shop, 24-hour front desk even it's own gasoline station!
Alban Towers is another famous address in the Cathedral Heights neighborhood. This rental apartment complex was recently renovated. The Gothic Revival architecture of this building nicely complements that of the National Cathedral, which is just up the street. (To learn more about Alban Towers, click here to read a Washington Post article about the historic apartment building.)
