Overview
(edit)
Salisbury is the largest town on the Eastern shore of Maryland and located in the seat Wicomico County. Salisbury's location at the head of Wicomico River was a major factor in growth. At first it was a small colonial outpost of Lord Baltimore's. The river was the only navigable waterway leading out to the Chesapeake Bay for early settlers. In 1732, Salisbury became an official port; growing to be second only to Baltimore as the most active seaport in Maryland. It is predominantly Caucasian with many families with young children. Though there are a lot of blue collar workers in the area due to the Perdue Farms where Perdue chicken is raised and processed, there are also a lot of professionals because of the college nearby, Salisbury University. Rentals start around $700 for a one bedroom up to about $1100 for a three bedroom. Much of Salisbury was built in the 1950's and few of the older houses have updates like central air conditioning. However, there are a lot of newly built communities for those looking for something a little more modern.
Salisbury has a little more to offer than most of the towns on Maryland's Eastern shore seeing as it's the largest. There is a mall and several small restaurants and bars due to the small college town feel created by Salisbury University. Local schools include: Glen Avenue Elementary School and James M. Bennett High School. Salisbury is the largest city on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The calendar of annual events emphasizes the region's focus on the outdoors. Additionally, the city and county maintain numerous parks for residents to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Scholars and performers associated with Salisbury University contribute greatly to quality of life. Museums and other historic facilities offer a respite from daily hustle. These include: Salisbury University Arboretum, Salisbury Zoo, Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, Edward H. Nabb Center for Delmarva History and Culture, Chipman Cultural Center, Poplar Hill Mansion, Port of Salisbury Marina, Wicomico Youth and Civic Center. Salisbury is also less than half an hour away from the Atlantic Ocean and outlet shopping up in Delaware. It is a great community for those looking for small town living without many of the small town living restrictions.
