Rapid City, South Dakota is in Pennington County. Rapid City has a population of approximately 60,000 people, making it the second-largest city in South Dakota. Rapid City sits on the eastern slope of the Black Hills Mountains and is known as the "Gateway to the Black Hills" and "The Star of the West". Rapid Creek flows through the center of Rapid City. South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City. In recent years Rapid City has boomed because of "urban flight" from west coast cities. Tourists come to Rapid City to enjoy the great outdoors, while enjoying the modern amenities of a big city. Rapid City has a plethora of history museums, science museums, theaters, and art galleries. Rapid City is not all fun and games though, as it is prone to heavy flooding during the rainy seasons.
