Overview
(edit)
Deer Valley is on the north end of the Phoenix city limits. The growth that has taken place in the area the last few years is phenomenal, due in part to the recent housing boom and the expansion of major corporations like American Express and USAA. These business additions make the area a more viable option for both living and working. New, more upscale office complexes are replacing older buildings, but at the same time, Phoenix mainstays like Turf Paradise, the thoroughbred racehorse track still remain, offering winter entertainment to Valley residents. The addition of the 101 Loop Freeway at this end of town opened up the area for new construction and wonderful new shopping venues were created around Deer Valley/Happy Valley Roads and the 1-17 Freeway. All of these venues offer upscale shops as well as big box stores such as Target and Wal-Mart. Movie theaters and restaurants also abound, making it an easy drive to find weekend entertainment. Housing in the area is varied, being a mix of older and newer homes, condos and apartment buildings. The mix of housing options makes for a wide pricing range when it comes to rents and home sales. The school districts vary here, some need work, especially the Deer Valley School district, while others like the Glendale Union High School District are doing very well. The parks and recreation departments in this area offer great classes and activities for families with children. The area is fairly safe with minimal crime.

My husband and I grew up in this area when half of it was still new, 30 years ago! It's been interesting to watch the changes as new growth worked it's way north to this end of the city. The addition of major corporations and retail outlets was definitely a plus, bringing much needed employment to the area. No more long commutes to downtown Phoenix! I loved living in the Deer Valley Neighborhood and it's fun to show my kids where we used to go to school and hang out. There's a fun restaurant at the Deer Valley airport where we used to eat sometimes. The mix of old and new has brought a different feel to the area, and there are definitely pockets of the area that need to be revamped, but I love that everything is so convenient now, including freeway access to various parts of town. No nightlife to speak of though, other than local bars. For a real "club" experience you have to head to Central or Downtown Phoenix or Scottsdale.
