Overview (edit)

The Central City area of Phoenix is basically the business district of the city.  This area covers the downtown area and the industrial areas immediately surrounding the heart of Phoenix.  This area is home to several large corporations, utilities and most of the municipal offices for the city of Phoenix and the state of Arizona, including Arizona's Capitol Building.  The area south of the I-17 freeway is comprised of industrial businesses and trucking companies, while the area east of the I-10 is where Sky Harbor International Airport is located.

Recent renovations and developments like Copper Square have made the downtown area more attractive, with the end goal being to draw people to local businesses during evening hours.  There are several great bar/restaurants and a few microbreweries in the area around Chase Ballpark and the US Airways Stadium. Arts and Entertainment can be found through Heard Museum, the Arizona Science Center, the Herberger and Orpheum Theaters, the Phoenix Civic Center and Symphony Hall.  ASU has established a downtown campus on Central Avenue making it easier for students to find corporate jobs near school. This area truly is the heartbeat of Phoenix when it comes to commerce and culture, but needs work when it comes to residential options.

As Phoenix works to draw more high tech and high profile corporations to the Valley, more attention is being paid to the downtown Central City area, which was sorely needed. It's a great area to hang out, there are so many things to do here! We love taking the kids to see a symphony or a play and to see the Diamondbacks, especially since Grandpa helped build the stadium. Lots of art and culture in the area! The Friday Night Art Walks through the downtown district were really enjoyable. Living in the Central City area can be tricky though, most of the homes are fairly old and while some have been renovated, most neighborhoods around this area are not all that safe - lots of crime. People seeking an Urban experience will like living here.
