Overview
(edit)
Pembroke Pines is small, relaxed town situated just west of Hollywood, Florida and neighbor to the North Miami district. Pembroke Pines is home to a large retiree population, single families, working professionals that commute to nearby Miami and Fort Lauderdale, and even a slew of celebrities. The city is a fairly new one; incorporated in 1960, Pembroke Pines used to be a barren landscape dotted with dairy farms. Over the years, due to the exponential growth of nearby South Florida regions like Miami-Dade, cheap land and development, and an influx of people and money during the 1990s, Pembroke Pines has grown significantly into one of South Florida's many prestigious suburbs.
Popular attractions in the city limits include the North Perry Airport, Pembroke Lakes Mall, C.B. Smith Park, the Hollywood Sportatorium and the Miami-Hollywood Motorsports Park. Pembroke Pines' growth has slowed over the last decade, however it was once considered amongst the "fastest-growing cities in America" in 1999, at which time Broward County had to build a bigger and better infrastructure to include additional public schools and public works to handle the growth. Public schools in Pembroke Pines have been honored in the past for their levels of academic achievement and community service. With Pembroke Pines being centralized to the South Florida community, the city has become a sought after destination for snow birds and retirees as well as the younger, college-bound population enrolling at nearby Broward Community College and Florida International University.
Some of the neighborhoods in Pembroke Pines are of modest means; available single-family homes, condos, townhouses, and a slew of rental properties are still trying to recover from the housing market debacle, so recent home prices have bottomed out, offering buyers and renters a vast discount on some very nice places to live. The job market here varies depending on the industry. There are many local goods and services offered and many residents take advantage of the local economy. Pembroke Pines is recommended for people who want to live here and commute to work in nearby Miami or Fort Lauderdale to enjoy a quieter lifestyle in the suburbs.
