Norfolk, Virginia is one of America's true water towns. 53 of it's 96 square miles are under water. Norfolk is home to the world's largest naval base that houses various battleships and large military vessels. Commercially, Norfolk is a major hub for cruise liners as well as being the country's largest coal shipping port. Norfolk residents enjoy close proximity to several excellent attractions including Historical Williamsburg, Busch Gardens and Virginia Beach.
Norfolk was founded in the early 1600's and incorporated in 1736. Its rich history is well reflected in its many museums, neighborhoods and waterfront shopping districts. The colonial architecture is prevalent in the Norfolk apartment and single family homes. Norfolk is a true melting pot with an equal amount of blacks and whites residing (237,000 total residents). Norfolk has 7 hospitals, 22 colleges (in close proximity) and 4 airports. Norfolk won the $1 million Broad Award in 2005 in Urban education for demonstrating the greatest overall performance and improvement. It is considered part of the Hampton Roads Metro Area. Affordability and opportunities are pronounced in Norfolk. Median home prices have more than doubled over the last decade.
