Overview
(edit)
As with much of Colorado's towns, Littleton's beginnings came with a gold strike. Prospectors found gold on Little Dry Creek about 4 miles north of the future settlement of Littleton. At the banks where Little Dry Creek meets the South Platte River, William Green Russell led a group of gold prospectors, who found about $500 of gold dust. Located about 15 minutes southwest of downtown Denver, Littleton is a bedroom community that grew out of urban flight to the suburbs into an area that once was heavily agricultural. Almost 90 percent of Littleton's residents commute to work. A lot of its agricultural roots remain with horse ranches scattered on the edges of the city. A bit of local trivia: famed Colorado cannibal Alferd Packer is buried in Littleton Cemetery.

Columbine was the site of the worst high school shooting in U.S. history. Two students killed 12 fellow students and a teacher before killing themselves in 1999.
