 Overview (edit)

Jonesboro is a town in Clayton County that's located 18 miles south of Atlanta. You simply hop on I75 and you'll be there in 20 minutes. The region comprising Clayton County was first settled by pioneers in 1821, as a result of the Treaty of Indian Springs, in which the Creek Indians ceded a vast portion of their domain to the State of Georgia. If you've studied the civil war in any depth, you've heard of Jonesboro because it was place where Atlanta finally fell in defeat to Sherman's army. Subsequently, Sherman went on to destroy other parts of Georgia. There are roughly 4,000 people in the city, but Clayton County is much larger. It's very well developed suburb that's grown tremendously in the last 20 years. The median cost of a home is $94,000, and it's 17% lower than the national average for the cost of living.

Jonesboro and all of Clayton County is an area that has grown very quickly since the early 1990's. Unfortunately, the term "smart growth." does not apply. Yes there are lots of places to shop with South Lake mall and the stores surrounding them. But the best word to describe it is trashy. The traffic is horrendous, especially Friday afternoon if you're traveling to Macon and beyond. Visitors to Atlanta often ask about Jonesboro because Margaret Mitchell describes it vividly in her book, Gone with the Wind. But you'll find nothing here that resembles the old south. Suburban hell is what Jonesboro is all about. Sure you can find some good prices on fairly nice apartments. But there are too many nicer areas in Atlanta where you would spend the same amount of money. The crime is awful, especially from gang violence. And the school system lost its accreditation for a few months a year ago. In the past 7 years, there's been never ending drama with the Clayton County board of education. It's unattractive and congested. Don't park here. Keep looking for a better place to hang your hat.
