Overview
(edit)
Highlands Ranch, Colorado is what's known as an unincorporated, census-designated place. In other words, Highlands Ranch isn't officially a city recognized by law, but acts in much the same way that a city does. Being so close to Denver, it's also considered a suburb of the large city. With an estimated population of over 85,000 people, Highlands Ranch is anything but small. Offering plenty in terms of housing, business and fun, Highlands Ranch is a great choice for professionals who work in Denver but don't want to live in the city.
One of the largest unincorporated communities in the United States, Highlands Ranch celebrated its 25th anniversary as a community in 2006, having seen amazing growth since the first homes were built in 1981. While it didn't have a lot to offer in terms of businesses when it first began, the Highlands Ranch community of today features plenty of businesses like restaurants, strip malls, retail stores, movie theaters and more. The area also has schools, public libraries and fairly recently a chamber of commerce.
The Highlands Ranch area definitely features nicer homes with a definite slant towards higher end prices. The area is controlled by the Highlands Ranch Community Association that gathers fees and help ensure the safety and happiness of residents, while also enforcing rules and a community covenant. Rental opportunities in this area come in the shape of large apartment complexes and condominiums, most with mid to high price ranges per month. Though the area may be considered high end, the slightly higher prices do come with the benefit of a safe and clean community.
