Overview
(edit)
Galveston is a city located on Galveston Island on the Gulf Coast, within the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area. The City of Galveston began as an important shipping port and vacation city until the Great Hurricane of 1900 destroyed most of the city. After the storm cleared, the city decided to up its defenses against future storms: a permanent concrete seawall was built along a large portion of the beach front and the entire grade of the city was raised some 17 feet behind the wall to a few feet near the Bay.
Hurricane Alicia and Ike have also caused major damage to Galveston, but the city has recovered amazingly. New home and apartment construction is on the rise, as well as complete refurbishment of many existing structures. Rental pricing in Galveston can be very affordable, depending on location, amenities and size.
Galveston is considered to be a vacation destination, with hundreds of thousands of people visiting the island every year. The city is home to both kid and adult friendly activities, including Moody Gardens, Schlitterbahn water park, restaurants, golf courses, unique shopping and, of course, the beach.
