Due to the vast waterways, Decatur was an intricate part North American development. Decatur served as the eastern terminus of the first railway built west of the Appalachian Mountains, the Tuscumbia, Courtland and Decatur Railroad. This railing system was implemented in the early 1800s and was incorporated into the Memphis & Charleston Railroad in 1850.

Because of its economic prosperity, Decatur was a major target during the American Civil War. At the Battle of Decatur in 1864, all but four buildings were destroyed by fire. The only structures remaining hwere the Old State Bank, the Todd House, the Burleson-Hinds-McEntire House and the Dancy-Polk House. During the reign of Confederate control, the Battle of Shiloh was devised at the Burleson-Hinds-McEntire House making this residence a historical Decatur feature.

The rebuilding of the city was attributed to people who migrated from the northern states. In 1889, the reconstructed Decatur was incorporated much to the disapproval of its pre-war residents. The older Decatur citizens despised that Yankee blood had moved into their territory and was primarily responsible for its resurgence. But in the insightful words of Rodney King, “Can’t we just all get along?”

Decatur is a true city of firsts! Decatur apartment dwellers reside in a city that contains the oldest bank in the state, The Old State Bank. This financial institution is almost two centuries old. America’s first wave pool is located in Decatur and still flowing at the Point Mallard Aquatic Center. The largest Victorian era home district in Alabama can be found within the boundaries of Decatur as well as the state’s oldest opera house, the Cotaco Opera House.

Besides rich American culture, Decatur apartment dwellers are also privy to wonderful neighborhoods. The city is separated into four distinct vicinities, the Northeast, Southeast, Northwest and Southwest. If you are interested in landing a Decatur apartment home in the Northeast area, survey the Albany, Downtown Decatur, Harborview, Bank Street, East Acres or New Decatur areas. If the Southwest end of town is your perseverance, Bayside, Fairveiw, Burningtree Mountian, Cedar Lake and Hickory Hills are just a few neighborhoods in that area. The Northwest portion of the city surrounds the Moulton Heights, Oak worth and West Decatur communities. The Southwest area of town contains Braswell, Austinville, Russell Village, Flint, Graystone, Dunbarton and many other neighborhoods.
