Overview (edit)

Dallas often gets a bad wrap from folks for lacking culture, beauty and depth. I've heard words like "plastic, shallow and stuck-up" used to describe Big D on more than one occasion, and used to, I agreed. Nowadays, however, Dallas is trying to shed the reputation of rich oil money, 10 gallon cowboy hats and snobbery that was brought about by the "Who shot J.R." generation.

This cultural revolution is especially vivid in the Downtown area. Armed with interesting architecture, a pedestrian domination and the Arts District, Downtown Dallas is leading the way in turning the city into an appealing destination for all walks of life. Whether you enjoy traditional art, dynamic exhibits, spending a day at a world famous aquarium or spending an evening at the symphony, you'll find what you're looking for. If you'd rather just grab a slice of pizza and sit at an outdoor table shaded by trees and large buildings, then the heart of Dallas can provide that service as well!

To live here is expensive, as it's prime real estate in a great location. But if you can afford the rent, then I thoroughly recommend taking a look in this area. It's quiet enough to live, but vibrant enough to always find something to do.

The Downtown area is the very heartbeat of the Dallas Metroplex. The best in food, shopping, and apartments/high-rise condominiums are all here. The cost, as you would expect with any prominent metropolitan area, is steep. Rent here can easily top $10,000 a month in some of the fancier places. But you just cant beat the view, the location, or the activities that bustle around on the streets below. If you are looking to live in the Downtown Dallas area, and work here as well, transportation is a breeze. The DART transportation systems can get you just about anywhere, unless youd rather walk (not terribly advisable late at night, as with any downtown area). If you plan to commute, DART only goes a few places outside the city and traffic can be heavy. Over all, the downtown area is about a happening metropolitan lifestyle. With recent renovations to the Victory Park area, and the addition of the American Airlines Center, a new life has been breathed into what was once a stagnant urban setting. The Dallas Museum of Art and Nasher Sculpture Center are stunning as always, and Myerson Symphony center is an absolute must for the upcoming season. Culture abounds in the Downtown area, with constantly changing exhibits, festivals, and always something to do. Expect more money and development to be poured into the Downtown area. If you can afford it, Downtown is a great place to live. If you dont, its still a great place to spend an evening!

Downtown Dallas is where Gen-Xers-Turned-Professionals live and play if they are not raising children. In a more green, peaceful world, it makes sense to live close to work. I think the sad reality is that a lot of these hotshots are interested in how being green affects their images, not their planet.

Okay, bitterness aside. Dallas has been desperate to have a downtown that thrives for eons, and the dream may come true at last. The restored and remodeled lofts are beautiful. The energy of living in Downtown Dallas may pale in comparison to Manhattan, but it beats the hell out of the quiet, almost Ambien-esque stupor of the suburbs.

This is a great place for someone who is career-focused and prefers to be out on the town to tending the garden.
