Overview (edit)

Incorporated as a village in 1850, is now a neighborhood in the north central part of Cincinnati, Ohio, United States.[1] The area includes the Ludlow Avenue Shopping and Dining District. Clifton is situated around Clifton Avenue, north of Dixmyth Avenue, approximately three miles north of Downtown Cincinnati. Several historic buildings and homes remain in the neighborhood. Clifton was developed in large part due to the expansion of the street car system in the 1880's-1890's

In the nineteenth century, mansions set in extensive grounds of gardens, parkland and woodlands dominated the northern section of Clifton, farther from the city. Their gates and gatehouses were spaced at intervals along Lafayette Avenue. In the southern section, denser settlement flanked a growing business district along Ludlow Avenue, centered on its juncture with Clifton Avenue.

The city of Cincinnati annexed Clifton in 1896. The University of Cincinnati relocated to Burnet Woods Park. Today the University is located in Clifton Heights, University Heights, Avondale, and Corryville, neighborhoods that surround Clifton. This entire area is often generically (and incorrectly) referred to as "Clifton" despite being several distinct and separate neighborhoods. The presence of Hebrew Union College, settled near the University, and the Sacred Heart Academy in Clifton helped to contribute to the intellectual and bohemian atmosphere of the neighborhood.

I always loved Clifton, it is a village-like community of quiet tree-lined, residential streets flanked by historic homes and mansions. With gaslights burning, Clifton beckons to both the cultured and urbane. Residents of Clifton are a mingling of students, educators, artists, professionals, and families.

Parking has really been an increasing problem in Clifton.  You might find your driveway blocked or someone's car on your proerty.  If you live near Cincinnati State or the Clifton Mosque, this could concern you.

Clifton is nestled in between 71 and 75. with easy access to both.

The average rent in Clifton is just under $700, and just under $600 in nearby Lakewood.  I personally feel that it's worth spending the extra $$ to be in the heart of Clifton.  Keep in mind, that it is a little more ecclectic, and if that's not your speed then you might want to look into some of the adjacent neighborhoods.

If you like the outdoors, then you are in luck.  Clifton Gorge encompasses a 2-mile stretch of the Little Miami State and National Scenic River, just east of John Bryan State Park.

Geologically, it is an outstanding example of interglacial and post-glacial canyon cutting. At one point, the river funnels through a deep, narrow channel, which was apparently formed by the enlarging and connecting of a series of potholes in the resistant Silurian dolomite bedrock. In other sections of the gorge, cliff overhangs have broken off forming massive slump blocks scattered along the valley floor.

The shaded, north-facing slopes provide a cool, moist environment for northern species including hemlock, red baneberry, Canada yew, arbor-vitae and mountain maple. This is one of the most spectacular sites in the state for viewing spring wildflowers including the rare snow trillium.

The only draw back, is that NO PETS are allowed in the preserve area!!!

Ludlow Avenue is the heartthrob of the community with a collection of shops and restaurants, as well as Cincinnati's only surviving art theater
