Overview (edit)

Brookhaven is a neighborhood north of Atlanta but within the perimeter of I-285. The original plan for the neighborhood was for it to be a golf course community, with elegant homes and views to match to the west part of Peachtree Road. This is now know as the "old" part of Brookhaven. This area has prestigious addresses and very valuable properties. The area east of Peachtree is now know as Brookhaven also and is somewhat more affordable (by Brookhaven standards) and commercial. Brookhaven has become one of Atlanta's most affluent communities. This area can have a fairly busy local social life thanks to Brookhaven Station and the new area down Dresden is being re-done and built up. There will be a large amount of new, semi-luxury living space with the advent of the new Village Place. Lofts and Aprartments are being built as we speak, as is a whole new shopping and commercial area. The area has more homes than apartments. However, what apartments it does have are pretty high priced.

Brookhaven has history that goes back to a plantation that was built back in 1810 by a European settler. Summer cottages sprung up in this along with superb golf courses that is still notable. Most of those cottages are gone but the area still has an enclave of large Tudor, Colonial, Georgian, and English cottage homes with the Capital City Golf Club in the center. A northern neighbor of Buckhead with less urban character than Atlanta.

The People - Who Lives Here?

Brookhaven is a country club-golf developed area of Atlanta. It has not strayed from this original intent for the land in this area. Very established older moneyed people, empty nesters and younger parents and their children live in the nieghborhoods that make up Brookhaven. New developments in Brookhaven continue to usher in upper middle class and upper class populations. However, many of the newer apartments that are up for rent are being scooped up by younger working professionals, most curiously between the ages of 27 - 34. This younger crowd mostly chooses to hang at the shops and restaurants located around Brookhaven Station.

Social Scene - Bars, clubs, restaurants

Most of the major spots that you find in the Brookhaven area will be all along Peachtree Rd between Ashford Dunwoody and Peachtree Dunwoody. The major spot that comes to mind when you think of Brookhaven is Brookhaven Station. In-fact many have described Brookhaven Station to be one large frat party for those that wish they were still in college. This plaza houses a number of great bars and restaurants that are visited nightly by the locals. Here you will find Hudson Grill, a large sports bar which hundreds of TVs, always showing the major football, baseball, and basketball games. The food here is great and the beer flows like honey. They often have different events so be on the lookout.

Directly across from this place you will find Pub 71, an Irish themed pub and Mellow Mushroom Pizza, a trendy pizza place where you can top your pie with just about anything you can imagine.

Going a little further south on Peachtree, heading towards Buckhead, you will find other goodies such as Terra Grill (now known as Terra Terroir), a tuscan type restaurant and Au Rendez Vous, a cool little bistro. And at Cherokee Plaza, also a little further down, you will find other places like Chin Chin (considered best chinese food in Atlanta), Elwoods Pizza, Canyons Burger Company, and Sushi Mania.

Driving down East on Dresden you will find some of the new space that is currently being re-done and built up. Here you will encounter a hidden little spot called Haven, a great upscale day-time eatery reminiscent of your classic brunch / lunch type place. At night you will find haven turns into Mix Lounge, a fun spot to meet up with your friends and have a relaxing night out with some drinks.

If you desperately need food at 3 in the morning after a long night out, check out Atlanta Diner on North Druid Hills, open 24/7.

The Value - Rental prices vs. quality of living

Historic Brookhaven is the area's core neighborhood. Homes surrounding the Capital City Club range in price from $800,000 to $4 million. Lots of neighborhoods in the area have teardowns that are replaced with McMansions. A new round of housing developments has reduced the number of affordable houses for the middle and lower classes.

Condos range from $180,000.00 to $250,000.

Post Glen is the closest apartment complex to the heart of Brookhaven. Here you will be able to find a fairly decent sized one bedroom apartment for around 1100. This is about average. Most of the other apartment complexes are considered luxury and gated, thus, expect to pay 1500-1600 to start at any of the other places, especially the closer you get to Buckhead, heading south on Peachtree. You may get lucky at one of the spots on North Druid Hills Rd as well so be sure to check those places as some of the homes may be for rent due to the local Oglethorpe College in the area.

TOWN/Brookhaven is slated to open in spring 2009 and will be a mixed used development with more than 1,500 residential units - apartments, mid rise condos and townhomes - planned to be available. It will be located on Peachtree Road, north of Lenox Mall and Phipps Plaza. Another new development scheduled to open is the Village Place at Brookhaven on Dresden Dr. Visit http://www.villageplacebrookhaven.com/ for more details on the development and possible renting.

Great to say you live in Brookhaven --- if you can afford it. It does provide fantastic access to just about everything though. So if you are working in the city, this may be a great place to think about. Not too far from the highway and major access roads, but far enough to where you feel like you're not directly in the city.

Transportation & Parking

Brookhaven MARTA station located at 4047 Peachtree Road. This MARTA station is located in the heart of Brookhaven. Parking for this station is around the back on Apple Valley.

Ashford Dunwoody Road is the main Brookhaven road north-south access to I-285.

North Druid Hills Road is the main north-south access road to I-85.

Parking in general wont be a problem anywhere you go. Most of these places are plazas so there is plenty of parking. However, when Hudson grill gets crowded, you can usually find some parallel parking on one of the side streets around B-Station.

Recommended Streets & Areas

Peachtree Road and Peachtree Dunwoody Roads that border and intersect this area. Two mian roads that lead into the city of Atlanta and to the northern sections of Atlanta. Living a little further away from Buckhead may be somewhat safer due to less car and foot traffic. If you can find a spot off of one of the side streets off North Druid Hills, you'll be in pretty good shape. Many of the homes are under foreclosure now, so you may find a good deal if you look hard enough.

The Essentials - Groceries, gyms, banks

American Boot Camp Company, Big Peach Running Company,

Not too many gyms to speak of in the immediate area. For a gym you may have to go to Crunch Fitness down in Buckhead, a little past Lenox, or take Windsor Pkwy, west, towards Sandy Springs and visit any of the many gyms located up and down Roswell Rd.

Wachovia, Ironstone Bank, SunTrust Bank

Kroger, Publix, Mom & Pops Food Store up and down Peachtree. Rite Aid and Blockbuster can be found in Cherokee Plaza, as can the post office, which is designated as one of the places that you can do your passport documents as well.

If you are into health food, you can find one of the best health food stores around on Peachtree called Nuts & Berries.

Dresden Elementary

Ashford Park Elementary

Woodward Elementary
