Albany,Georgia is a town located 184 miles south of Atlanta on the banks of the Flint River in Dougherty County. The population is roughly 75,000 with a median household income of $37,000. This town is the setting in some of the works of the famous writer W.E.B. Dubois. Also legendary musician, Ray Charles, was born here. The Creek Indians were the first residents. In 1836, Connecticut businessman Nelson Tift settled the area and named after the capital of New York. The town was a booming center of commerce because of cotton prior to the civil war. Today, healthcare, education, and a Marine Coprs Logistics Base are the big employers. It's still very southern in that it's surrounded by pine trees, farms, and plantations even though few people work in agriculture.

Albany, Georgia is a small southern town that lacks small town values. The cost of living is low but the crime is very high. In fact, in 1988 it was named the murder capital of the U.S. because it's murder rate was the highest per capita. It no longer has this title, but it's not the ideal place to move and raise a family. Reviews of the city are less than flattering. People speak of rudeness, crime, and general lack of caring for the city and residents. There are high rates of poverty, chronic unemployment, and gang violence.
