Also named for the Polish General who helped the U.S. during the American Revolution, Tadeusz Kosciusko, somewhere along the line the 'z' went away. The county seat of Attala County, Kosciusko is located along the fascinating Natchez Trace Parkway, where everything from Native American burial grounds to Civil War ruins can be spied. The town is just northeast of Jackson, and is a part of the Mississippi Blues Trail. Get ready for some good music, southern cooking, and copious green space.

Moving to Town

You won't need snow boots if you're moving here, where the climate is considered mild year 'round, with hot and humid summers. Because of that humidity, you may want to look for air conditioning, or at least ceiling fans in your new abode. You'll find rental condos, many a house rental, and pet friendly apartments here.So how much time do you need to find the place of your dreams in this pleasant southern town? Probably a few weeks will do the trick, as vacancies are fairly high here. But be sure to explore your options by driving through the community, looking online and checking out the local rental listings in The Star Herald or the Clarion Ledger. When you're ready to sign that lease, be sure you have your ID, your W2s or other proof of employment, and access to your credit report, so you can reassure your landlord you'll be the best renter for the property you choose.

Neighborhoods

Now that you're thoroughly convinced that you should live in Kosciusko, it's time to pick out your neighborhood of choice.

South Natchez Street / South Madison Street: Home to the Parkway Plaza Shopping Center, this is a suburban neighborhood by density, consisting of medium sized to small single family homes and apartment complexes where both owners and renters reside. Most properties were built between 1970 and 1999, although older properties are also located here. This would be a good spot to find an apt for rent, as the vacancy rate is usually reasonably high.

City Center: The heart of town directly abuts the green space of the Natchez Trace and also contains pretty Niles Park. Suburban in density, and with a fairly high vacancy rate, there are plenty of pleasant rental options here including medium to small single-family homes and small apartment buildings. Homes were built between 1940 and 1999.

Carmack / Hesterville: Close to I-55 and Highway 51, the population here is very spread out, so if you want a lot of green space between you and your neighbor's bar-b-q, this is the spot. Mostly single family homes and mobile homes are located here, you should be able to find a rental location fairly easily, as vacancy rates are high. The area is studded with pretty creeks, such as Sugar Creek, for evening strolls and bird watching.

Life in Kosciusko

The geographic center of Mississippi, Kosciusko has plenty of open space and parks, as well as community activities such as year 'round sports programs like baseball, softball, and soccer. A pleasant small town feeling pervades the area, where you'll find Redbud Springs Park with its monument of the town's namesake, reflecting pools, benches, and flowering landscaping. Hugh Ellard Park is the place to go for sports, with nine baseball and softball fields for all ages, and the Parks and Rec office. There's a soccer complex too. But if you're looking for a different kind of ball play, how about Jason Niles Park, with tennis courts and playground equipment for the kids? You can walk the walking track or make a splash at the Splash Pad and Pavilion, where kids and adults alike can have fun getting soaked from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Also strong on the sports facilities is the Northside Park, where basketball courts and softball and baseball fields are available. Of course, it's hard to top the proximity to the historic and beautiful Natchez Trace Parkway. You can drive this road any day of the week and explore everything from a Cypress Swamp to battlefield memorials and the recreation of a turn of the century farm. Equally fascinating is the Mississippi Blues Trail created in 2006. Interpretive markers dot historic sites that relate to the birth and influence of the blues themselves. Put on some Muddy Waters and get in the mood to explore this exciting musical heritage right at your doorstep. While the town itself has a charming, small town vibe, and you'll find some Spanish moss on the trees, and a community that appreciates its local sports leagues, Kosciusko is only a little over an hour from Jackson, a major metropolitan area where you can visit the Jackson zoo or check out a lively nightlife and dining scene. If you want to head on into Memphis and walk down Beale Street for a healthy heaping platter of blues or ribs, that's a two hour drive.But right in town, you'll find plenty of activities. Right along the beautiful Natchez Trace, you'll find the aptly named Old Trace Grill. Get yourself a real southern meal of grilled catfish and homemade chiffon pie. Their hush puppies are memorable, and if you have no idea what a hush puppy is - it has nothing to do with barking dogs. Another town classic is Penn's Restaurant, where you'll find deep fried shrimp a specialty. As for shopping, from a Walmart Super Store to the antiques, collectibles, and cool crafts of Traditions and Trends located downtown, you'll find plenty of things to buy. And you'll want to spend plenty of free time exploring the Natchez Trace. You'll find the Mississippi Craft Center which is dedicated to Mississippi's Native Art, the ghost town of Rocky Springs, waterfalls, the Merriwether Lewis Museum, and the Native American Ceremonial Mound known as Emerald Mound, among other sights and sites to see. Whether you're driving a vast bridge across the Tennessee River or taking a quiet wooded trail to see fossilized wagon wheel ruts from pioneer days, there's plenty to take in here. Historians, hikers, bird watchers, and lovers of native flora and fauna can rejoice in this comfortable town's easy access to this National Park Service treasure.
