Dixon is located in northern Illinois about halfway between Rockford and the Quad Cities. Because there isn’t much in terms of employment opportunities in Dixon, many residents tend to commute either 40 miles northeast to Rockford or 70 miles southwest to the Quad Cities area.

American history buffs will enjoy living in the city that former president Ronald Reagan called home for a large portion of his childhood. The Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home National Historic Site is located smack dab in the middle of downtown Dixon.

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a lot of development in Dixon and the real estate market here is dominated by owner-occupied homes. While there are a few apartment rentals scattered throughout town, your best bet will likely be found in a rental home or duplex. However, the low cost of living and decent safety record mean that most rentals are found in cheap apartments in safe neighborhoods.

Most Dixon residents agree that the area north of the city center is the most desirable. You’ll find a settled, family-friendly community with all with a great safety record. Because it’s more settled, there are fewer apartment rentals and more rental homes. The developments here, however, frequently offer amenities, like gyms, pools and clubhouses. Two bedrooms here generally range from $650 to $800.

The areas east and west of the city center are slowly becoming better places to live. Here you’ll find some rentals in apartment buildings that offer everything from studio apartments to three bedrooms. The east side is generally better regarded than the west, though, with a better safety reputation and comparable rents. Two bedrooms in this area generally range from $500 to $750.

Good news for pet lovers! Dixon’s rental market, small as it is, is fairly pet-friendly. While some larger apartment communities may require an additional pet deposit or have size and breed restrictions, many rentals will be both cat and dog friendly.
