Atherton has always been a must-see stop along the way to sunny San Francisco, even before it was the glorious town we know today. In 1866, when Atherton was known as Fair Oaks, it was a crucial stop along the Southern Pacific Railroad line connecting San Francisco with San Jose. In 1923, the town was officially incorporated as Atherton, named after a Massachusetts business man.

So now that you've decided to move to Atherton, it's time to figure out which neighborhood is for you.
West Atherton: This stylish and trendy neighborhood is filled with big, beautiful homes on lavish grounds. With rental prices on the high side, apartment complexes and homes for rent are nothing short of the best in this wooded suburb close to every activity Stanford University has to offer. Though residents have to travel to another part of Atherton to get their shopping done, this neighborhood is conveniently located for many commuters with access to Route 101 and Highway 280, both of which lead through the scenic San Francisco Bay Area.
Lloyden Park: Plan to work in San Jose or San Francisco? Want to live in a small, close-knit community? The tiny, immaculate, four-block neighborhood of Lloyden Park is your stereotypical green, friendly California neighborhood. Ideal for commuters, this neighborhood is conveniently located just northwest of the Atherton area Caltrain station.
Lindennwood: Just a 5-10 minute drive from the beautiful San Francisco Bay, Lindennwood is convenient for commuters who need access to Routes 101 and 84. For those who don't wish to drive, Caltrain public transit lines are just a short walk out of the neighborhood. Menlo Oaks: This little neighborhood is right next to the Veteran's Hospital. Tony's Pizza and Menlo BBQ are nearby.
West of Alameda: This neighborhood is surrounded by golf clubs; choose from the Menlo Country Club or the Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club.

For all you shopaholics, the Stanford Shopping Center is just a short drive away. For those who want to stay close to home, the Woodside Plaza will take care of you. When it comes to groceries, you have Lucky's and Chavez Supermarket.
Dine In or Go Out
Meat eaters, omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans unite! The Atherton area restaurant scene has a little bit of everything. Karakade Thai Restaurant will please the vegetarians. Bonsai Japanese Restaurant is sure to please everyone's tastes. Other options include Celia's, John Bentley's Restaurant and Lulu's on the Alameda.
Things to Do
Other than Flood Park, there's Holbrook-Palmer Park, which has sports fields and courts along with walking paths. For something bigger, Huddart Park is just a quick drive west and there you can explore hiking trails, ride horses or just have a leisurely picnic.
